Insteon Announces Alliance with the Google Assistant

Insteon’s Millions of Installed Devices Now work with the Google Assistant

Irvine, Calif. – Jan 8, 2018 – Insteon®, a leading developer of IoT technology for the home, today announced that its line of ultra-reliable connected home devices are now compatible with the Google Assistant on speakers like Google Home, eligible Android phones and iPhones, and other Assistant-enabled devices. With this integration customers can easily control their Insteon lighting system, including wall switches, outlets, plugs, and more – all with their voice.

“Insteon continues to build interoperability with companies that enhance our customer’s experience with their connected home,” said Rob Lilleness, CEO of Insteon. “With our latest integration with the Google Assistant, our customers have even more options to control their lighting system hands-free with their voice.”

"Helping to create a smart home with the Google Assistant is one of our key focus areas and we're looking forward to giving users one more way to connect, thanks to Insteon," said Mark Spates, Product Lead for Smart Home at Google. "With the Google Assistant and Insteon, users can control their lights, plugs, outlets and more, no matter where they are in their day or what device they're using."

To get started, customers using the Insteon Hub (2245-222) simply link their account from within the Google Home App or the Google Assistant on their phone. Once paired, customers can start voice controlling their Insteon devices by saying “OK Google” or “Hey Google” followed by instructions like “Turn on the outside lights” or “Turn off the downstairs lights.”

Insteon is the world’s most reliable IoT technology for lighting and electrical control. Insteon achieves this reliability via its patented dual-mesh network, which communicates simultaneously via wireless radio waves and the home's existing wiring. Insteon integrates with hundreds of products and systems in the home, including HVAC units, locks, timers, lighting, cameras, music, humidity and leak sensing, garage doors and more.

Richmond Capital Partners Acquires Smartlabs and Fortifies Company with $7.3 Million in Funding to Accelerate the Company’s Push in the IoT Industry

Technology Industry Veteran Rob Lilleness to Lead the Company

Irvine, Calif. – June 13, 2017 – Richmond Capital Partners, a private investment firm based in Seattle, today announced the acquisition of Smartlabs Inc., parent company of Insteon®, an Internet of Things (IoT) technology company, and Smarthome®, an eCommerce superstore for home automation. As part of the acquisition, Rob Lilleness will assume the role of chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Lilleness has built multiple successful high-tech businesses in digital media, mobile, software and consumer products. Most recently he served as president and Chief Executive Officer for Medio Systems, an ACCEL-backed company, which was acquired by HERE Technologies (a company currently owned by BMW, Daimler, Audi, Intel, and Tencent). Prior to Medio, Lilleness was president and COO of Universal Electronics (NASDAQ: UEIC). During his tenure at Universal, earnings more than tripled and the market capitalization grew from approximately $100 million to $500 million.

“I’ve been following Smartlabs almost from when they started. Their Insteon line remains arguably the strongest in the IoT space for controlling and communicating with electrical components in one’s home—whether via Amazon Alexa, smartphones, pads, or traditional wall plates and remotes,” said Rob Enderle, principal analyst, Enderle Group. “Additionally, Rob Lilleness, with his background helping to build Microsoft’s networking business, is one of the few people that has both the resources and experience to take Smartlabs where I’ve always believed they could go.”

One of the Largest Opportunities in IoT

According to a report published by Business Intelligence, by 2020 the U.S. residential market will have 193 million devices in connected homes with almost 50 percent of those devices in Smartlabs’ core electrical, lighting and sensor market. The global smart electrical control market is expected to grow to $10.8 billion over the next five years.

“There are two incredibly interesting IoT spaces in technology today—the car and the home,” said Lilleness. “Over the next five to 10 years, it is inevitable that a large portion of electrical nodes in the home will be ‘smart’ and addressable via the internet. With Insteon’s patented dual-mesh technology that communicates both wirelessly and via the home’s own electrical wiring, Smartlabs has the most reliable and scalable technology for electrical control and communication, which is critical to meet consumers’ expectations.”

Smartlabs headquarters will remain in Irvine, Calif., and the company plans to open a software development office in Seattle.

New Motion Sensor from Insteon Enhances Motion Activated Lighting

Irvine, California – January 18, 2017 – Insteon®, creators of the world’s premier home automation and control technology, today announced a new and improved wireless motion sensor, which makes activating lights based on movement easier than ever. With a completely redesigned body, the new Insteon motion sensor is half the size of its predecessor and features wall, corner, or tabletop placement options as well as external setup and motion override buttons – just a few of the new features that make this new motion sensor best in class.

The new Insteon motion sensor can be paired directly to switches, outlets, and plugs without an app or hub – reducing setup time to seconds. For a more customized setup and configuration experience, pair the sensor with the Insteon Hub using the free Insteon for Hub mobile app. In addition to configuring when and how the motion sensor will activate lighting, the Insteon Hub allows you to turn the motion sensor into an alert system, pushing messages to your phone when there’s motion in a particular area of the home.

“Great satisfaction and peace of mind comes with motion controlled lighting,” said Joe Dada, CEO of Insteon. "Not only does it reduce energy waste by automatically turning lights off when you leave a room, it relieves you of the hassle of reminding family members to turn lights off. And with this latest redesign, we’ve made our sensor smaller, better looking and easier than ever to place around the home.”

In addition to features found in the previous model such as night-only mode and adjustable countdown timer, the new Insteon motion sensor adds these newer features:

  • Improved wireless performance
  • Smaller, more modular design provides easy tabletop, corner or wall mounting options
  • Motion rest button – provides a convenient way to temporarily pause motion activation
  • Sensor can be plugged into power with an optional USB cable and power adapter that also allows the sensor to act as a repeater – helping repeat Insteon signals throughout the home
  • Multi-colored setup LED and beeper aids in setup and configuration

Now accepting preorders exclusively through smarthome.com with units expected to ship the first part of February.

New Insteon Plug-In Siren

New Plug-In Siren Helps Make Insteon Self-Monitored Home Solutions More Robust

IRVINE, California – November 22, 2016 – Insteon®, creators of the world’s premier home automation and control technology, today announced a new plug-in siren. The Insteon Siren adds an additional layer of security and peace of mind to Insteon’s line of DIY home monitoring and control solutions.

“Our customers enjoy being connected with their home when they’re away at work or on vacation,” said Joe Dada, CEO of Insteon. “While sensors can trigger lights to come on if activity is detected and notifications are sent to the customer’s phone, deterring unwanted visitors with a loud siren is a quick way to get the point across – not to mention alerting neighbors of a potential problem.”

This simple plug-in device works together with Insteon wireless sensors such as door/window sensors, water leak sensors, and motion sensors. Arming and disarming the audible alert is possible from Insteon wall keypads or from any other controller. Pairing it together with the Insteon Hub (2245-222) and all setup, arming/disarming, and activation can be done directly on any Android or iOS device.

In addition to a loud 115 dB siren, the device also features a secondary chime tone. This provides a more subtle notification for when homeowners simply want to know that a door or gate is opened or if motion is detected.

Insteon Integrates with Sonos

Control Sonos Speakers from the Insteon Hub app, wall keypads, wireless remotes and sensors

CES – Las Vegas – January 6, 2016 – Insteon®, creators of the world’s premier home automation and control technology, today announced integration with Sonos. Audiophiles can now include their Sonos speakers as part of Insteon’s connected home system, providing customizable control from Insteon wall keypads, handheld remotes and sensors. Insteon will be highlighting the Sonos integration and its comprehensive line of connected home solutions during CES® in booth 70723, located in the upper level of Tech West, Sands Expo.

Through this integration, music can now play a part in custom Insteon lighting scenes so that while the lights slowly fade on in the morning, gentle music resonates throughout the home and the coffee starts brewing. Alternatively, at dusk, the lights could fade on while users arrive home to their favorite dinner prep playlist.

For on-the-fly sound adjustments, users are liberated from having to pull out their smartphones. By assigning functions like volume up/down or station change to Insteon wall keypads, Sonos owners can easily control their speakers as they walk in and out of rooms or when they simply do not want the hassle of dealing with an app. It’s easy for homeowners to replace normal wall switches with Insteon keypads that can be used to control the existing light, while adding additional buttons for control of Sonos speakers or other lights and appliances throughout the home. Users can also pick up an Insteon wireless remote from the coffee table and instantly enjoy control at their fingertips. Insteon will be offering pre-printed keypad buttons specifically for Sonos related functions, which will make basic sound control even easier for anyone to use and understand.

“Integration with Sonos will be a very compelling feature for new and existing Insteon customers who want to incorporate beautiful, crisp musical control into their home, creating a comprehensive home automation experience,” said Joe Dada, CEO of Insteon. “Offering Sonos control from our keypads and remotes removes one of biggest barriers to the enjoyment of smart audio systems and offers homeowners a seamless integration of lights, music and more. In that sense, this announcement is yet another example of Insteon achieving its overall goal of bringing all connected devices into elegant command.”

Sonos integration for iOS will be available this week in the App Store. Compatibility for Android will come soon thereafter. For more information, please visit www.insteon.com/sonos.
