Controlling Insteon Scenes with Amazon Alexa
It is now possible to control Insteon scenes with your voice via Amazon Alexa. If you already have Insteon scenes created, they will automatically become available to Alexa. Before you start issuing those voice commands we recommend taking a moment and reading the below information. If you're new to Insteon scenes, we'll also cover why you'll be so thrilled to start using scenes. So, here we go...
Why Use Insteon Scenes Instead of Alexa Groups
Until now Alexa could only control multiple Insteon devices via a single voice command if you placed them in a group within the Alexa app. While this is a quick way to group devices, the devices activate one after another rather than all-at-once. This is particularly important when controlling a large number of devices. Here's an example video clip showing the difference between Insteon scenes and Amazon Alexa/Echo group control.
Another important difference is that Insteon scenes allow you to have each device within the scene respond in different ways (Living room light 50%, Ceiling light 25%, Dining room off, etc). This is something not currently available with Amazon Alexa/Echo groups.
To learn how to create Insteon scenes, please see the following support articles:
Things to Keep in Mind When Using Insteon Scenes
- If you already have scenes created, there is no need to do anything to start controlling them with Alexa
- If a new scene is created you will have to re-run discovery within the Amazon Alexa app, just as you do when adding new devices. Pro Tip: Amazon Alexa does a discovery automatically once an hour or so.
- Supported voice control commands: On and Off only. Dim, Bright and Set to % are not supported
- Unsupported devices: all access control/security devices (I/O, lock controller, garage control) are automatically suppressed. So if you have scenes that contain actions for any of these types of devices, you will not be able to control the scene with Alexa.
- Previously unsupported devices like our ceiling fan controller or the on/off outlet receptacle are now controllable via scenes. If you are an iOS user and have Sonos integrated, you can now activate scenes containing Sonos speakers.
- Naming conventions may become an issue. If a scene and device are named the same or are similar, Alexa will have difficulty knowing which one you want to control. The obvious fix is to give scenes and devices unique names.

Leak Sensor Troubleshooting - Not Receiving Alerts
After adding your leak sensor to the Insteon for Hub app, you may occasional encounter a situation where you do not receive alerts. There are several reasons why this might occur.
- Alerts are not enabled in the Insteon for Hub app
- Your leak sensor is out of range
- Your leak sensor battery is dead
- Leak sensor has malfunctioned
To troubleshoot this issue, please try the following:
Confirm Leak Sensor and Hub are Communicating
Without moving the leak sensor from its current location, tap the set button on the device.
If the leak sensor blinks at all, you should have received an alert.
- If no alert was received, confirm alerts are enabled for the leak sensor. See how to do this at the end of this article.
- If you still did not receive and alert, move the leak sensor closer to the hub and try again. If the alert is received, the sensor is functional but out of range from the hub. A repeater is necessary.
- If you still did not receive an alert, replace the battery in the leak sensor. If you still do not receive an alert, the leak sensor has failed and must be replaced.
If the leak sensor blinks once, pauses then blinks multiple times:
- Leak sensor is functional but is unable to communicate to a linked device (hub or other receiver). Remove the leak sensor from the app, factory reset the leak sensor, then add to the app once again.
- If you are not able to re-add the leak sensor to the app, move the sensor closer to the hub and try again. If adding to the hub succeeds, your leak sensor was out of range at its installed location and a repeater is necessary.
- If you are still not able to add the leak sensor, the unit has failed and must be replaced.
If the leak sensor doesn’t blink:
- Replace the battery and try again.
- If the leak sensor still doesn’t blink, the device has failed and must be replaced.
Confirm Alerts are Enabled for iOS
- In the Insteon App, navigate to Settings
- Tap Devices
- Tap the desired device
- Tap Alerts
- Ensure that the switch for the desired alert is enabled then tap Message & Recipients
- Ensure that the switch for Push Notification is enabled

Using Insteon+ When You are Away from Home
When you are away from home, Insteon+ and Insteon Hub require an Apple TV (3rd generation or later) for remote access. Without a properly configured Apple TV, all of your devices will appear in Insteon+ but their function will be disabled.
Configure Remote Access
Step 1
On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, navigate to Settings > iCloud. The iCloud account listed is the account Insteon+ is using for your HomeKit configuration.
Step 2
On your Apple TV, navigate to Settings > iCloud. Ensure that you are signed in using the same iCloud account as your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
Basic Troubleshooting
- If remote access does not work, sign out of your iCloud account on your Apple TV and then sign back in.
- Ensure that your Insteon Hub and Apple TV are connected to the same network. If you have multiple routers or a complex networking setup, use the steps in this article to identify where to connect your devices.
- Remote access only works with Apple TV (3rd generation or later). Applicable model numbers are A1427 and A1469. If you are unsure about the model of your Apple TV, visit apple.com for support.
