Essential info
Great option for my setup. I have several of these strategically placed. And while I use voice automation with my setup these are nice if you don’t fell like talking or can’t or as a back up. I hope that the timer version of this comes back as I have a couple that need replacing.
Beware of the fragile nature of the replaceable buttons with etched ones. The support behind the buttons break easily. It would also be nice if Insteon had comprehensive software for Mac
I have nine 8-key Insteon keypads installed. I've replaced seven over about 15 years. Until now, the replacements (version numbers ranging from v5.35 to 2317 R8.8) have operated identically. I bought new ones to replace a panel with two keypads side-by-side (and replenish my spares). The new keypad light levels (v4224 R8.7) are different from the older (2317 R8.8). Both keypads are set for same background and button lighting levels. The lighting difference between the two keypads is obvious. Otherwise the new keypads work like the older ones.
This wall mounted keypad works perfectly. Great looking and good quality. It is one of the only solutions for a standard wall box.
The 8 button keypad is an excellent way to not only move control of several devices all around the house to one spot, but it also makes a great tool for monitoring the status of devices. I use them at the front door and use the bottom two buttons to monitor the alarm status. Using a permanent marker (until color kits come back) Alarm Set is Red and Disarmed is green so I know immediately if I need to run to the laundry room in 90 seconds or less. Or not to let the dog out because the alarm is set.
In my office one of the buttons controls and monitors the christmas lights and front of house lights. If someone shows up, one press and the front lights up or I can let them in the gate with a momentary press of a button. (i/o linc)
To get five stars we need a way to get custom keys again and color kits. The clear keys and printed key names look one step lower quality. When your hood is Lutron/Crestron/Control4, Insteon already has the lowest quality appearance (i3 and 4 button looking better though) Using the clear keys look.... well... cheap.
It helped a little to use white paint and paint the edges of the clear keys carefully but getting the words perfectly straight somehow isn't in my skill set, and the red/green colors with the permanent marker are spotty at best.
For the standard keys, I found that the colored file folder tabs can be cut to size and work well for color change on the white keys, not so much the clear even after being painted.
