SmartLabs' Joe Dada Named to University of California, Irvine Extension's Sustainable Buildings: Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Advisory Board

December 9, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. -  University of California, Irvine Extension's Sustainable Buildings: Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy program has announced that Joe Dada, CEO of SmartLabs, Inc., will be joining their advisory board. As a member of the advisory board, Dada will assist in the direction and development of the curriculum, marketing and partnership opportunities.

"UC Irvine Extension is fortunate to have Joe Dada - an industry leader in building automation - as an advisor in our program," remarks Kirwan Rockefeller, director of Arts and Humanities Programs. "Currently in the U.S., organizations with 50 or less employees pay 35% more for energy costs than the sector average. With Dada's expertise incorporated in our curriculum, we believe we can help small- and medium-sized businesses bridge that gap and increase their profitability."

Dada's vision is that our homes should have remote control "everything". He founded SmartLabs in 1992 as a bootstrap startup. Shortly thereafter, he launched Smarthome.com, becoming one of the world's first ecommerce companies. During the late 1990's, Dada acquired two product engineering firms, formed SmartLabs Design, and began designing and manufacturing proprietary remote control lighting and related products. Between 2000 and 2005, he led the development of Insteon, a dual-band (RF plus Powerline) mesh networking technology which has now become the best selling home area networking technology. Currently in use in millions of homes today, Insteon is now being used to for energy management, demand response and load-shedding in Smart Grid trials with four of the top 10 utilities in the United States. Dada holds a bachelor's degree with honors in engineering and an MBA from the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana.

"I am excited and honored to be joining UCI as an advisor to this program," commented Dada. "Not only do our products relate directly to the program, but as the CEO of SmartLabs, I understand the challenges of controlling a business' energy costs."

The Sustainable Buildings: Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Specialized Studies program was created to help small- and medium-sized organizations develop a strategic plan to reduce their annual energy costs. Curriculum addresses renewable energy sources, energy/water conservation, new building design and existing buildings retrofits.

Smarthome Introduces New I/O Linc Morning Industry Lock Control Kit

October 13, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. - Smarthome announced the release of the new I/O Linc - Insteon Morning Industry Lock Control Kit today. The kit, which includes two I/O Lincs and a Morning Industry RF Remote Control Key Fob, allows users to activate the locking mechanism of Morning Industry RF deadbolts and/or doorlocks (sold separately) via radio frequency (RF) to lock or unlock their door from any Insteon controller.

"Morning Industry's products have always been highly rated by our customers," noted Laurie Maroni, Vice President of Marketing at SmartLabs Inc., the parent company of Smarthome. "Adding the ability to control their RF deadbolts and doorlocks with Insteon further signifies our commitment of integrating Insteon into all aspects of home control."

The kit acts as a bridge between Insteon devices and Morning Industry's RF deadbolts and doorlocks. When I/O Linc receives a signal from any linked Insteon device, it sends that signal to the remote, which translates the Insteon signal into a radio frequency (RF) command to lock or unlock Morning Industry RF deadbolts and/or doorlocks. One kit can control as many locks as are in range of the remote. This kit also gives the consumer the control to regulate access to their property from anywhere in the world using the SmartLinc Insteon Central Controller.

"We're excited that Smarthome has developed a simple, cost effective way of using Insteon to remotely activate our RF deadbolts and door locks at the touch of a button," stated Matt Jordan, VP of Sales at Morning Industry. "This brings a whole new feature set to our product line."

This kit and all Morning Industry deadbolts, doorlocks and accessories can be purchased at www.smarthome.com/morningindustry. All Insteon products can be purchased atwww.smarthome.com/insteon.
