Insteon® Ships World’s First Remote Control Networked LED Bulb

$29.99 Bulb Offers Dimmable Remote Control with iOS and Android Apps

June 19, 2012

IRVINE, Calif. - Insteon®, manufacturers of the best-selling, most reliable home automation technology, today introduced the Insteon LED Bulb 8 Watt (60W), the world’s first-to-market networked remote control dimmable LED light bulb. Featuring Insteon’s award-winning technology in a sleek design, the Insteon LED Bulb is a technological innovation sure to brighten both the connected home and personal technology industries alike.

“For years, home automation has controlled light fixtures with plug-in lamp modules, wire-in switches and keypads. But, until now, no one has controlled the bulb itself. It’s exciting to be the first to introduce a new product to the world,” said Joe Dada, chief executive officer, Insteon.

The Insteon LED Bulb features simple setup, intuitive control and easy linking to any Insteon controller, such as a handheld remote. When paired with the free Insteon app, the SmartLinc Hub turns an iOS/Android smartphone or tablet into a fully functioning remote control of the bulb or an entire Insteon network. The bulb is fully dimmable and can be added to any number of scenes to create custom lighting at the touch of a button.

The Insteon LED Bulb contains Insteon’s patented dual-band communication technology, the most reliable, efficient communication system available. Just like other Insteon devices, the bulb acts as a network signal repeater and sends signals over both radio frequencies (RF) and a home’s existing wires (powerline).

The Insteon LED Bulb retails for $29.99. For more information or to watch a demonstration video, visit www.insteon.com.

“The market is very excited to be getting an LED bulb with remote control built in, at a price that is actually below the cost of most standard LED bulbs. It’s like getting remote control for free,” said Joe Gerber, president, Insteon.

The Insteon LED Bulb is the latest addition to the Insteon product family, built upon the best-selling SmartLinc Hub. The Insteon product family ranges from wall switches, plug-in modules and  keypads to thermostats and motion sensors.

With its simple installation and setup process and trustworthy communication, Insteon has become the industry’s premier remote control networking technology. Plug-in modules and in-wall switches make it possible to add wireless control to any appliance in a home or business without having to hire a contractor. By making every networked device talk to each other via radio frequencies and existing electrical wiring, Insteon eliminates the need for custom wiring.

Create Home Automation Mayhem with Insteon®!

Open-Source Mayhem Insteon Code Package Now Available

April 27, 2012

IRVINE, Calif. - Home automation enthusiasts, developers and aspiring hackers, rejoice! Insteon has some exciting news for anyone who’s ever wanted to create the ultimate smart home…of the future! Thanks to Mayhem—the ultimate open-source, custom-control coding platform—our intrepid team of software engineers set to pounding the keyboards.

In case you haven’t heard, Mayhem is a Windows application developed by Microsoft Research—and generously donated to Outercurve—that allows users to connect and control different devices through customized chains of command between “events” and “reactions.” Want to launch a favorite website with a voice command? Use Mayhem to set up a microphone and keyword (event) and type in the web address (reaction). Downloadable packages expand Mayhem’s capabilities to include smartphones, consoles, applications and more.

During development, Insteon proved to be a perfect Mayhem match. “Insteon’s simple programming interface was a very obvious ‘must have’ for Mayhem,” said Paul Dietz, a researcher at Microsoft. “With Insteon support, Mayhem now has access to an amazingly rich variety of home automation devices.”

On that note, we’re proud to announce that free Insteon packages for Mayhem are available to download. We provide the code; you just plug in the possibilities!

So, just what can you do with the dynamic duo of Mayhem and Insteon? Well, what can’t you do? When Mayhem’s sleek interface meets Insteon’s legendarily reliable remote control, the scenarios are literally endless:

  • Secret passwords aren’t just for 007 anymore. Whisper “the narwhal bacons at midnight” to access your own private lair—or unlock the front door.
  • Date night at home gets a technological makeover. Tap a KeypadLinc button and launch iTunes (although the romantic playlist is up to you) along with the obligatory dimmed-light ambience.
  • Point an Insteon motion sensor at your couch. When it detects your cat/dog/pet of choice jumping up, your computer can yell in your stead. Also works great on kids!
  • If your home office gets a little stifling in the summer, turn on the A/C via your Insteon thermostat with a fittingly cool password. (See what we did there?)
  • Wireless keyboards are so 2011. Impress everyone by controlling your latest PowerPoint presentation from an Insteon remote or even the Insteon app on your smartphone.
  • Settling in for a noob-pwning session? With a single keystroke, dim your lights to 50%, switch on the ceiling fan, launch the latest FPS—even turn on the Red Bull-stocked mini-fridge under your desk.
  • If you have Tony Stark-esque ambitions, hook up a Kinect and voice-activate everything on your Insteon network. Jarvis’s posh British accent not included.

If your typing fingers are now itching to get triggering Insteon actions and reactions, there are only a few simple steps between you and total automation domination:

  • Procure and install the necessary Insteon components: a SmartLinc or USB PowerLinc module and at least one device module. If you’re new to Insteon, we suggest starting off with one of our bestselling products: LampLinc (2457D2), SwitchLinc (2477D) or OutletLinc (2472DWH).
  • Download and install Mayhem.
  • Download the Insteon Mayhem package.
  • Get connected! Choose whether you want your Insteon device(s) to trigger or react to the event—i.e., tapping the SwitchLinc paddle launches your web browser, or typing a particular word turns on your LampLinc-enabled desk lamp—then simply follow the onscreen instructions to link your Insteon devices in literally three seconds.
  • Enjoy your newfound power over your home domain.

Also, be sure to vote for Insteon as your preferred Mayhem plug-in. Just click the Facebook “Like” button on the Insteon Mayhem page to show your support. Happy home hacking!

With its simple installation and setup process and trustworthy communication, Insteon has become the industry standard in efficient home and building automation. Plug-in and in-wall modules make it possible to add wireless control to any appliance in your home or business without having to hire a contractor. By making every networked device talk to each other via radio frequencies and existing electrical wiring, Insteon eliminates the need for complex rewiring or a central hub. This allows for rapid inter-device communication with very few delays or drops.

Insteon Announces Compatibility in 3-Phase Electrical Buildings

January 13, 2012

IRVINE, Calif. - Insteon, creators of the best-selling home automation and control technology, today announced support of Insteon in Three-Phase Environments.

For years, dealer-installers have been successfully using Insteon-compatible products in three-phase electrical environments. To-date, SmartLabs had not publicly stated support for these types of installations. But now after the successful launch of several wire-in, dual-band products, as well as extensive testing, SmartLabs is delighted to announce formal support for three-phase installations.

Insteon is currently managing many high profile commercial buildings in the US, and even some overseas. These buildings range in size from 5,000 SF to 600,000 SF and include office buildings, industrial buildings, sporting arenas as well as a foreign embassy campus in Washington, DC. SmartLabs also uses Insteon to control and manage its own 60,000 SF facilities. "We hugely benefit by 'eating our own cooking'. It helps us identify opportunities early and has provided significant savings on our energy bills" says Joe Dada, CEO.

Insteon-compatible products and solutions have gained popularity in the Building Automation Systems (BAS) market for their easily retrofit designs, low cost and most importantly the reliability above all other wireless solutions.

Insteon Announces New Ceiling Fan Speed and Light Controller FanLinc™ Integrates Ceiling Fan Control into Home Automation System

January 12, 2012

IRVINE, Calif. -  Insteon, creators of the best-selling home automation and control technology, today announced FanLinc, the newest member of its Insteon line of wireless home control products. FanLinc allows existing ceiling fans to be remotely activated from a wide variety of Insteon controllers, such as a handheld remote, wall keypad or smart phone.

The product installs inside the fan cowling and provides control of up to four fan speeds: high, medium, low and off. FanLinc also includes a 300 Watt dimmer to control ceiling fan light kits.

"Many ceiling fans are retrofits, leaving the homeowner with limited control," comments Mike Scharnagl, Director of Marketing at SmartLabs. "FanLinc provides the homeowner with many different ways to control and automate their fans. For example, when combined with an Insteon thermostat, ceiling fans throughout the home could automatically begin spinning when the furnace turns on, thus helping circulate hot air and reducing furnace run time."

FanLinc is expected to be available in February and will retail for $79.99. FanLinc is another great addition to the ever expanding family of Insteon products that control lighting, appliances, HVAC and security devices in the home or business.

For more information on FanLinc, visit http://www.smarthome.com/fanlinc

Insteon® OutletLinc™ Dimmer Named Electronic House Product of the Year

Remote Control Dimmer Receptacle Tops Lighting Controllers Category

January 11, 2012

IRVINE, Calif. - Las Vegas, NV - Electronic House (EH) announced that SmartLabs' OutletLinc Dimmer - Insteon Remote Control Dimmer has been awarded its Product of the Year in the Lighting Controllers Category.

Each year, EH kicks off the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) with its awards that are selected by a panel of industry leaders and the Editors of Electronic House and CE Pro. SmartLabs has garnered product of the year awards from EH in the past for its HouseLinc - Insteon Desktop Software (2006) and RemoteLinc - Insteon Wireless Remote Control (2007).

"We are very excited to be recognized by Electronic House," commented Mike Scharnagl, Director of Marketing at SmartLabs. "Electronic House truly covers all aspects of the electronics industry, so for their panel and editors to recognize OutletLinc Dimmer among the best products of the year is tremendous."

OutletLinc Dimmer can be remotely activated from any Insteon controller, providing a clean, low-profile alternative to the standard plug-in modules. OutletLinc Dimmer uses a simple magnetic key to only provide power (and dimming) to lamps that you want to control. The key easily attaches to any lamp plug with no cutting of wires or modifications. The bottom outlet functions as a standard receptacle, rated at 15 Amps. Both top and bottom outlets are tamper resistant.

The simple-to-use OutletLinc Dimmer has advanced features like an adjustable ramp rate that slowly brings the lamp on and a preset dim level that stores your preferred choice of 32 brightness levels when turning the lamp on initially. The product is made to be installed in place of any wall receptacle and controls incandescent loads up to 300 Watts.

The OutletLinc Dimmer is available through retailers such as Smarthome.com and Amazon.com for $59.99.
