Cornell University's SILO House Debuts at New York State Fair - 2009 Solar Decathlon Competitor Featuring Insteon Technology on Display in Syracuse, NY

September 1, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. - The Cornell University Solar Decathlon entrant - Silo House - made its debut last week at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, NY. The 800 square-foot home, which features Insteon home automation technology controlling electrical and lighting applications, will be on display through Labor Day, before being shipped to Washington, DC for the contest in October along with the other 19 entries.

The Solar Decathlon Contest is comprised of 20 University based teams, each given $100,000 to showcase the design, build and operation of a home completely powered by solar energy. The event is a decathlon in that judges reward points in 10 different categories.

"We chose to go with Insteon because it is very scalable, which meant we could count on it to adapt to a lot of technologies," said Jeremy Blum, Cornell University team member. "Compared to more industrial solutions, Insteon is very reasonably priced, meaning that it could be implemented in a consumer-aimed solar house. Part of the competition rates market viability, and having an easy-to-implement control system will be a big part of that."

"We're proud to have contributed to this project," stated Laurie Maroni, Vice President of Marketing for Smarthome. "These students are pushing the envelope with regards to energy efficiency, renewable energy and solar technologies. We can only hope that their ideas and efforts support the ever-growing need for zero energy homes."

"Insteon devices allow us to save power by permitting the automation of lighting and electrical systems," added Blum, "this is naturally important in a solar power house; in addition, the actual devices consume very little power."

The Solar Decathlon was created by the U.S. Department of Energy to bring attention to one of the biggest challenges we face - an ever-increasing need for energy. As an internationally recognized event, the Solar Decathlon offers powerful solutions to using more efficiently and from renewable resources.

GridPoint Acquires Lixar’s Energy Business, Enhances Smart Grid Software Platform and Establishes Canadian Presence

Lixar’s Solutions Provide Sophisticated User Interfaces and Support Multiple Protocols and Devices

June 29, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. - GridPoint, Inc., a leading smart grid company, today announced that it has acquired Lixar’s energy business, an Ottawa company providing energy management solutions that offer sophisticated user interfaces and support multiple communications protocols and devices. The acquisition enables GridPoint to enhance its enterprise-class software and establish a Canadian presence.

“We welcome Lixar’s talented software developers, whose work has been very well-received by the market, and look forward to collaborating to serve the needs of our utility customers,” said Peter L. Corsell, CEO, GridPoint.

Lixar’s energy efficiency and load management solutions easily integrate with a utility’s grid management systems and support a number of protocols, including Insteon, Modbus, Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Z-Wave and X10, to control a wide variety of home automation and customer premise devices.

“We are delighted to join the team and believe we have a perfect fit of product and culture,” said Richard Oh, Managing Partner, Lixar.

Lixar provides utilities and their customers with highly sophisticated and flexible user interfaces that can be easily customized to meet the individual needs of both the utility and end user. The interface’s online personality helps educate and guide users via voice and text about how to use the system and achieve their energy goals and also facilitates communication with the utility. Other unique features include the ability to update energy profiles and control real-time events through smart phones, including iPhone and BlackBerry devices. Additionally, conservation tips and energy efficiency advice are provided via streaming video to help the consumer manage energy use.

Lixar also offers a transformer monitoring solution that monitors temperature, voltage, power and current and provides data-rich reporting about location and status. It alerts both the utility and its customer to a problem and automatically takes action, such as disabling the transformer to prevent damage, based on pre-programmed rules.

“Lixar’s software will enable GridPoint to integrate enhanced features into our platform, in addition to offering solutions to the Canadian market,” said Michael J. Carlson, who leads GridPoint’s Smart Grid Operations and its new Ottawa offices.

GridPoint recently released GridPoint Platform 3.0 and announced that Hometown Connections, the utility services subsidiary of the American Public Power Association (APPA), selected GridPoint as its exclusive smart grid software platform provider to public power companies. GridPoint also intends to continue many of the IP equipment and system integrator partnerships that have been developed by Lixar to distribute its technology throughout North America.

“GridPoint is a truly visionary company and is poised to become the leader in the smart grid software space,” said Bill Syrros, CEO, Lixar.

GridPoint Platform 3.0, a standards-based open platform, allows utilities to progressively integrate and customize smart grid solutions, including energy efficiency, load management, renewable integration, storage management and electric vehicle management. SmartLabs the Leader in Home Automation Products, Announces the Release of I/O LINC - Insteon Keypad Control Kit and I/O Linc - Insteon Rain Sensor Kit

June 11, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. - SmartLabs, Inc. is pleased to announce the latest releases in their line of I/O Linc Insteon Low Voltage / Contact Closure Interface Kits: I/O Linc - Insteon Keypad Control Kit and I/O Linc - Insteon Rain Sensor Kit.

About I/O Linc Insteon Low Voltage / Contact Closure Interface
I/O Linc is a universal Insteon interface with contact closure sensor input and a low voltage / contact closure relay output, monitors and controls any low voltage device. Thanks to several different output relay modes, I/O Linc can easily adapt to different types of devices. "Contact closure and low voltage are used to automate a wide array of home systems and devices," says Laurie Maroni Vice President of Marketing at SmartLabs,"I/O Linc is flexible enough to support each type of home system and affordable enough for several to be placed around the home." For the same price as a single low voltage interface with many inputs and outputs, several I/O Linc modules can be placed around the house in the locations where they are needed.

I/O Linc - Insteon Keypad Control Kit
The I/O Linc - Insteon Keypad Control Kit enhances your Insteon network by giving you the ability to operate Insteon-controlled devices via a numeric code. By entering a numeric code into the keypad, an Insteon signal can be sent to unlock doors for access control (door lock sold separately) and/or initiate lighting scenes using Insteon devices such as Dimmers and SwitchesWire-in/Outlet Modules and/or Plug-in Modules. The keypad can be programmed with 56 individual access codes, each assigned to an authorized individual user or to a group of users.

I/O Linc - Insteon Rain Sensor Kit
Combining the features of I/O Linc and a rain sensor, this kit will allow users to be alerted in the event of excess liquid (rain and/or water) build-up. The rain sensor can be placed anywhere where you would like to detect the accumulation of water. As soon as water starts to collect, the rain sensor will trigger I/O Linc to turn any Insteon controlled lights or appliances on or off, notifying you of the condition. When used in conjunction with other I/O Linc kits, it can be used to trigger sprinklers to automatically shut-off when it rains, saving water and money, or it can be placed near the foundation of your home to help detect detrimental standing water and flooding.
