Create Home Automation Mayhem with Insteon®!

Open-Source Mayhem Insteon Code Package Now Available

April 27, 2012

IRVINE, Calif. - Home automation enthusiasts, developers and aspiring hackers, rejoice! Insteon has some exciting news for anyone who’s ever wanted to create the ultimate smart home…of the future! Thanks to Mayhem—the ultimate open-source, custom-control coding platform—our intrepid team of software engineers set to pounding the keyboards.

In case you haven’t heard, Mayhem is a Windows application developed by Microsoft Research—and generously donated to Outercurve—that allows users to connect and control different devices through customized chains of command between “events” and “reactions.” Want to launch a favorite website with a voice command? Use Mayhem to set up a microphone and keyword (event) and type in the web address (reaction). Downloadable packages expand Mayhem’s capabilities to include smartphones, consoles, applications and more.

During development, Insteon proved to be a perfect Mayhem match. “Insteon’s simple programming interface was a very obvious ‘must have’ for Mayhem,” said Paul Dietz, a researcher at Microsoft. “With Insteon support, Mayhem now has access to an amazingly rich variety of home automation devices.”

On that note, we’re proud to announce that free Insteon packages for Mayhem are available to download. We provide the code; you just plug in the possibilities!

So, just what can you do with the dynamic duo of Mayhem and Insteon? Well, what can’t you do? When Mayhem’s sleek interface meets Insteon’s legendarily reliable remote control, the scenarios are literally endless:

  • Secret passwords aren’t just for 007 anymore. Whisper “the narwhal bacons at midnight” to access your own private lair—or unlock the front door.
  • Date night at home gets a technological makeover. Tap a KeypadLinc button and launch iTunes (although the romantic playlist is up to you) along with the obligatory dimmed-light ambience.
  • Point an Insteon motion sensor at your couch. When it detects your cat/dog/pet of choice jumping up, your computer can yell in your stead. Also works great on kids!
  • If your home office gets a little stifling in the summer, turn on the A/C via your Insteon thermostat with a fittingly cool password. (See what we did there?)
  • Wireless keyboards are so 2011. Impress everyone by controlling your latest PowerPoint presentation from an Insteon remote or even the Insteon app on your smartphone.
  • Settling in for a noob-pwning session? With a single keystroke, dim your lights to 50%, switch on the ceiling fan, launch the latest FPS—even turn on the Red Bull-stocked mini-fridge under your desk.
  • If you have Tony Stark-esque ambitions, hook up a Kinect and voice-activate everything on your Insteon network. Jarvis’s posh British accent not included.

If your typing fingers are now itching to get triggering Insteon actions and reactions, there are only a few simple steps between you and total automation domination:

  • Procure and install the necessary Insteon components: a SmartLinc or USB PowerLinc module and at least one device module. If you’re new to Insteon, we suggest starting off with one of our bestselling products: LampLinc (2457D2), SwitchLinc (2477D) or OutletLinc (2472DWH).
  • Download and install Mayhem.
  • Download the Insteon Mayhem package.
  • Get connected! Choose whether you want your Insteon device(s) to trigger or react to the event—i.e., tapping the SwitchLinc paddle launches your web browser, or typing a particular word turns on your LampLinc-enabled desk lamp—then simply follow the onscreen instructions to link your Insteon devices in literally three seconds.
  • Enjoy your newfound power over your home domain.

Also, be sure to vote for Insteon as your preferred Mayhem plug-in. Just click the Facebook “Like” button on the Insteon Mayhem page to show your support. Happy home hacking!

With its simple installation and setup process and trustworthy communication, Insteon has become the industry standard in efficient home and building automation. Plug-in and in-wall modules make it possible to add wireless control to any appliance in your home or business without having to hire a contractor. By making every networked device talk to each other via radio frequencies and existing electrical wiring, Insteon eliminates the need for complex rewiring or a central hub. This allows for rapid inter-device communication with very few delays or drops.

2009 Solar Decathlon Competitor Cornell University to Feature Insteon as Their Energy-Efficient Home Automation Solution

August 4, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. - SmartLabs, Inc. announces that Cornell University has chosen Insteon® home automation technology as an integral piece of their home build in the 2009 Solar Decathlon at the National Mall in Washington, DC, fall of 2009.

The competition is comprised of twenty University based teams, each given $100,000 to showcase the design, build and operation of a home completely powered by solar energy. Insteon was selected by Dr. Bruce R. Land, Cornell University Faculty Advisor, who said they “recognized the Insteon family of products as the right technology to help automate and control our solar powered home…where responding to the environment and controlling the house accordingly is critical, Insteon provides a simple and reliable solution for helping meet our home control challenges.” Smarthome representative Steve Lee felt the competition will “show the complete depth of Insteon, by using it as a full communication protocol through the management of lighting, appliances, contact closures, thermostats and IR control. We are building a seamless integration of Insteon products with other home systems towards a common goal of total energy efficiency.” Realizing the potential energy savings and convenience home automation can provide, Cornell is looking to add other Insteon-compatible control systems.

Over the next year, Cornell’s team will work with Smarthome to build a power efficient, reliable, affordable and convenient solution. The partnership should provide an example of how the home of the future will use Insteon automation to effectively manage resources and save energy.

SmartLabs the Leader in Home Automation Products, Announces the Release of Two New I/O LINC - Insteon Kits

May 18, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. - SmartLabs, Inc. is pleased to announce the latest releases in their line of I/O Linc Insteon Low Voltage / Contact Closure Interface Kits: I/O Linc - Insteon RF Proximity Reader Kit and I/O Linc - Insteon Doorbell and Telephone Ring Alert Kit.

About I/O Linc Insteon Low Voltage / Contact Closure Interface
I/O Linc is a universal Insteon interface with contact closure sensor input and a low voltage / contact closure relay output, monitors and controls any low voltage device. Thanks to several different output relay modes, I/O Linc can easily adapt to different types of devices. "Contact closure and low voltage are used to automate a wide array of home systems and devices," says Laurie Maroni Vice President of Marketing at SmartLabs,"I/O Linc is flexible enough to support each type of home system and affordable enough for several to be placed around the home." For the same price as a single low voltage interface with many inputs and outputs, several I/O Linc modules can be placed around the house in the locations where they are needed.

I/O Linc - Insteon RF Proximity Reader Kit
Combining the features of I/O Linc and an RF proximity reader, this kit will allow users to wave a wireless RF ID key tag in front of the proximity reader and send Insteon commands. The Insteon signal can be used to unlock doors for access control (door lock sold separately) and/or initiate lighting scenes using Insteon devices such as Dimmers and SwitchesWire-in/Outlet Modules and/or Plug-in Modules. The weatherproof RF proximity reader can be mounted near a door or entry area and includes six RF ID key tags with one trillion possible code combinations for added security.

I/O Linc - Insteon Doorbell and Telephone Ring Alert Kit
The Doorbell and Phone Ring Detector works with I/O Linc to initiate an Insteon signal when a guest arrives and presses the doorbell or if you receive a telephone call. Using linked Insteon controlled devices you can create a visual alert with lighting to let you know when your phone or doorbell. Up to two doorbells and/or one phone line can be connected to the detector. Adding an additional I/O Linc to this kit will allow for two distinct Insteon commands to be sent from separate door bells or from a door bell and a telephone.

Other I/O Linc Kits Available:
