Smarthome Offers To Automate The White House Company Reaches Out To President Obama With Assistance

March 5, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. -  President Barack Obama knew his first weeks in office would be tough with the economic crisis and the war in Iraq, however he could not have imaged that the first smudge on his presidency would be for keeping the thermostats too high in the White House.

During the last days of January, media outlets began criticizing Obama for turning up the Oval Office thermostat, an action Obama lectured voters on during his campaign.

"After seeing the backlash he had gotten I offered our help," said Smarthome Chief Technology Officer Dan Cregg. "I wrote him a letter offering to automate the White House so thermostats, lights and appliances could all be controlled via remote control, timers or motion sensors so no energy would be wasted." SmartLabs engineers and manufacturers have introduced over 200 automated home control products with their award-winning, patented Insteon technology

Cregg added, "Since he's cutting spending in a lot of areas, my offer was free products and installation, so I'm really hoping one morning to have a voicemail from the White House." Thus far, Obama has not replied.

Smarthome's corporate offices in Irvine, CA have already implemented changes proposed to the President by Cregg. All of the infrequently used lights are on Insteon motion sensors, Insteon thermostats are remotely controlled, and employees are updated daily on the company's energy consumption. Employees on the west side of the building typically rely on sunlight en lieu of overhead lighting.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Provides Connecticut Family With Home Automation Courtesy of Smarthome

February 6, 2009

IRVINE, Calif. -  When Home Designs BY Bruno and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" reached out for help for their latest home makeover project for the Girard family in Voluntown, CT, Smarthome jumped at the opportunity. The Southern California-based home automation superstore provided the home builders with switches, outlets and remotes featuring its award winning Insteon technology, which will allow the Girard family remote control access to lights, thermostats and other appliances throughout their home.

"When we learned of the immeasurable losses the Girard family had endured, we welcomed the chance to participate in this project," explained Laurie Maroni, Vice President of Marketing for Smarthome. "This family has been through so much that our help wasn't just a good thing to do, it was the right thing to do."

Pinnacles of their community, the Girard family has always participated in a variety of volunteer efforts and charitable missions. The true heroism and courage of Thomas and Marc Girard will live forever in the memories of the many peoples' lives they touched. Both members of the Friars and the Knights of La Ponte, father and son embodied the spirit of generosity and dedication in all aspects of their lives. Marc was studying to become a priest and Thomas, a computer technician by trade, donated his time to fundraising to help the elderly and the poor and to repairing computers at the children's elementary school. A year ago, they lost their home in a fire and the Girards moved from a tent, to a tiny camper, to Carol's mother's house, which is almost 40 miles away from where the children go to school. The children sleep scattered throughout the house-in the living room or in the cellar-due to lack of space. Then one afternoon in June, Thomas took three of his children to a nearby lake for an afternoon swim. Thomas began having trouble breathing and Marc rushed into the lake, brought Hannah to safety and then went back into the water to help his father. Tragically, neither Marc nor his father made it back and Marc died trying to save his father's life.

Airing on Sunday, February 8th at 8:00 PM on ABC, watch the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" design team featuring team leader Ty Pennington and designers Michael Moloney, Paige Hemmis, Ed Sanders and Rib Hillis, and local builder Home Designs BY Bruno build the Girard Family a state-of-the-art new home.

The location address is: The Girard Family 100 Preston City Road, Voluntown, CT 06384.
