LinuxMCE Includes Insteon Support (Beta)

January 12, 2008

IRVINE, Calif. - Insteon support from the Linux MCE project has finally arrived. Linux MCE is open source -

"whole-house media solution with pvr + distributed media, and the most advanced smarthome solution available"

- software for linux. LinuxMCE has recently announced beta support for the PLM 2412s module. This Power Linc Modem (PLM) is a simpler version of the, more common, Power Linc Controller (PLC). It has the ability to send both Insteon and X-10 commands, but not as a stand alone unit.

LinuxMCE provides drivers, written in Ruby, for both the PLM and the EZBridge. The EZBridge "bridges" your Insteon controller to your ethernet network. The EZBridge isn't cheap though ($154.99 at the time of this writing). Being that it's an ethernet device, it could potentially allow you to control your devices while you're away from home.

While this doesn't seem like a huge leap for LinuxMCE, it definitely shows that Insteon won't get left in the dark.

Insteon Allows for Control with Any Universal Remote

SmartLabs introduces IRLinc, allowing instant control of lighting and appliances.

January 10, 2008

IRVINE, Calif. - The Insteon camp is growing.SmartLabs just announced the IRLinc, a plug-in interface that enables control of Insteon-compatible lighting and other appliances using almost any universal remote.

That’s a nice perk. As much as we all love new toys, some are very addicted to their existing remotes. It’s comparable to the groove in the couch—it takes time to achieve that kind of magic!

Hide the sensor in your A/V gear and use your remote to zap Insteon signals via your home’s existing electrical wires. The IRLinc can control over 400 different compatible devices.

SmartLabs currently manufacturers over 170 Insteon-compatible products. The IRLinc is available for pre-order from Smarthome for $99.99.

SmartLabs Releases World's First Insteon-Compatible Outlet

Provides Built-in, Whole-House Custom Remote Control

January 08, 2008

IRVINE, Calif. - As part of its growing line of over 170 Insteon-compatible products, SmartLabs, Inc. announces the launch of its new OutletLinc, the world's first Insteon-compatible electrical outlet. This Decora-style receptacle replaces a standard outlet for easy, Insteon control of almost any plug-in light or appliance.

Controllable from any Insteon-compatible wired or wireless controller, the Insteon Remote-Control Outlet inserts easily into any X10 network. OutletLinc is a duplex receptacle with one always-on outlet and one controlled outlet, which can be added to lighting scenes in seconds. The controlled outlet's 15-amp relay is powerful enough to control most appliances. Available in white, ivory, almond, and black, OutletLinc blends in seamlessly with an Insteon network and any home decor.

"Plug-in modules like the LampLinc are great for remotely controlling devices that might need to be moved, but for an exposed outlet, most people prefer the clean lines of a standard outlet," said Laurie Maroni, SmartLabs VP, Marketing. "The OutletLinc wires in like a standard electrical receptacle, but since the top outlet is controlled by Insteon, people can control pretty much any plug-in device remotely, without connecting a bulky plug-in module."

The Insteon Remote-Control Outlet is available at Smarthome.com starting at $45.99.
