Create Virtual Multi-Way Switches

Insteon devices can be linked together to create virtual multi-way switches without the need for dedicated traveler wires. The steps in this article detail how to link two wall switches together but the steps could be repeated to extend your multi-way switch setup to include numerous devices.

iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Step 1

Navigate to Settings by swiping from the right to open the drawer.

When ready, tap Next.

Step 5

Configure the role for each device in the scene by tapping the Responder/Controller/Both button.

Controller devices will activate a scene, responder devices will be activated in the scene and devices configured as both will both activate the scene and respond to its activation.

For our virtual multi-way switch, both switches need to be set to Both.

Step 6

You can also configure what a device will do when the scene is activated by tapping the green button in the right of each row.

Dimmable devices support both On Level and Ramp Rate.

On Level configures how bright the light will be when the scene is activated.

Ramp Rate configures how quickly the light will turn on, off or dim.

For our virtual multi-way switch, we want both switches to behave identically so we've left their ramp rate at instant and on level to 100%.
